Wow, despite my foot it’s been a pretty crazy week for me. This past weekend I went home to Vancouver for my dad’s 60th birthday. Steve rented a wheelchair for me on the ferry because of the long walk to the passenger pick-up. It was quite interesting with everyone staring at me! At least we got a ride to the ferry terminal from a friend so I didn’t have to try to catch two buses with my foot being the way it is.
My dad had a few people over, mostly family, and we had rented tables and chairs. It was a smashing success, however I felt useless not being able to help. My brother and sister-in-law did so much of the work. Shortly after getting my stitches out, I started walking a little bit around the apartment without crutches, mostly on the side of my foot that wasn’t operated on. Because I wanted to help with the party, setting up and everything, I walked on it quite a bit because there wasn’t much room for crutches. As well, when all the guests came, I didn’t use my crutches and instead walked. It was tough because I wanted to talk to everybody, but so many of the guests were standing in random places which I couldn’t do. After a few minutes I sat on the couch and just talked to whoever came in there.
It was good to see everyone, but trying to explain my foot story over and over again became a bit tedious. Since I’m not on painkillers anymore I was able to drink a little bit, and I was all dressed up. It was a good night, but I certainly was in pain by the end of the night.
The next morning we went out for breakfast and I used my crutches without putting any weight on my foot. I had to be careful not to walk much for a couple of days to give my foot a chance to recover a bit.
But it is so hard to use crutches in this heat. We are at the start of another heat wave here, a record-breaking heat wave. And trying to walk outside with crutches? Tough! I can’t wait until I can get rid of them for good.
