The type of surgery I’m having is called an Austin Bunionectomy, where basically they shave off the bone of the bunion, cut the tendons and the bone in my first metatarsal, realign the bone, and hold it in place with a long pin. There are not too many good websites that I can find describing it, but a lovely (not graphic) youtube video here: Austin Bunionectomy Demonstration.

I will be on crutches for a few weeks, but can put some weight on it with a special surgical shoe. I generally have to keep it elevated for the first couple of weeks, and ice it for the first few days. No idea yet what I’ll be prescribed as far as painkillers. As well as the long pin, I will have about 15 or 20 stitches in the top of my foot.

I am only having my left foot done, because my right one does cause pain but not as severe, and also, they refuse to do both feet at the same time. I will have my right one done eventually, but probably not for a couple of years.

It will be great fun!
